Artisan Cheese Company

Owners Louise and Parker Converse of this downtown Sarasota shop wanted to find simple and economical adaptations in order to establish their new business in an existing retail/commercial space. It was also important to them to preserve the original character of the space, while bringing a clean, modern flair to the environment.

The existing space, previously a travel agency specializing in cruises,  was one-of-a-kind in that it was decorated with antique paneling, trim work, shelves and doors that had been salvaged from an early 20th-century-era luxury steamliner. Because the millwork and trim were too unique to callously discard, I worked with the owners to find ways to incorporate it into the new space. The aesthetic of the store and its new deli counter was intended to be simple and modern with warm touches of natural wood and custom wood elements. Ultimately, a blend of the old and the new came together very well to create the right balance.

This 975 sq. ft. project converted the existing space into a cheese shop with a deli counter; a small kitchen for preparing daily specials; and a new custom picnic table and floating wood shelves, which were designed by the owner. The table is a simple element that creates a fun place for patrons to gather. The shop features hand-crafted cheese and other top-quality products. Be sure to stop by Artisan Cheese Company and try some of their gourmet mac-and-cheese! The picnic table and cantilevered shelves were made by local woodworking artisan, Bob Marino of Marino Millworks, Inc.
